This boat has a special place as it is the first keelboat design commission for Bakewell-White Yacht Design. She is still owned by her original owners who built her themselves to a standard that would make many professional boatbuilders envious. 38 Special is an extension of the New Zealand school of lightweight fast cruiser/racer yachts - simple but effective and bags of fun. The simple water ballast system was installed to allow that performance to be available when racing and cruising short-handed, and it is great for settling the boat down when at anchor.

A lightweight water-ballasted harbour and coastal racer designed specifically for short-handed sailing, she was the class winner of the New Zealand shorthanded NAVICO race series for two consecutive years. A cost effective yet high performance strip planked Cedar and E-glass hull construction is complimented by selected use of carbon reinforcements, most notably in her unconventional but highly efficient "Z" keel where efficient use is made of intermediate modulus carbon fibre for increased stiffness from her minimum foil section. This Z keel arrangement has been pioneered in New Zealand by Bakewell-White Yacht Design.
