Based at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club on Perth's Swan River, A'vela was designed for a client stepping up from an aging Farr 36 and wanted something more comfortable so that his wife and family would come sailing, but a yacht that would be sporty enough to satisfy himself and his mates while racing, both in club events on the river and offshore and coastal events.

You can generally gaurantee wind in Perth bt there are times of the year when the sailing breeze is relatively light so the boat needed to have a generous sailplan and yet have the ability to sail without a huge number of crew on the rail when cruising. Draft is also limited in the Swan River where the ability to get close to the shore and out of the current is important. The solution was both a lifting keel - or more accurately a dual draft keel, combined with waterballast for when cruising. The waterballast system is relatively simple but effective with approx 920kg of water per side, giving a very stiff platform even when shorthanded.

A reasonably straightforward interior has been crafted in cherry by local builder Peter Milner Yachts who as usual have done a superb job of translating our design into reality. Peter is a wizard at nutting out systems and true to form most people would not even notice the ballast tanks, transfer system, or the under-deck control lines.

The carbon Rig is by NZ Rigging in New Zealand and sails by Quantum, Perth. Deck gear by Harken. The yacht sports both a spinnaker pole and a retracting bowsprit for gennaker sailing. Frank and the family are wrapped in the boat and look forward to many seasons sailing and associated silverware.
