This unique daysailer was designed for one of Japan's senior eye surgeons so that he could spend the evening sailing by himself to wind down before continuing home from work. He has owned four previous boats but they were all powerboats and this edition of "Black Jack" is his first venture into sailboats. Coming with no pre-conceived ideas about how a yacht should be, the client has developed through us an unusual cockpit layout with a helm forward configuration in the familiar style of a small powerboat.

With in-boom furling and an electric headsail furler and self-tacking sheet set up, all sail handling apart from the gennaker is done from the helm position using electric winches. The boat was crafted by Davie Norris Boatbuilders in Christchurch New Zealand, carbon spars by Matrix Masts in Auckland and sails by North Sails Auckland. The deck package was provided by Lewmar.

The interior arrangement is simple with no berths. The galley allows for simple food preparation using a microwave and electric kettle and is geared around short term entertaoinment. The settes are big enough to sleep on if necessary and the bathroom is luxuriously large with seperate shower.

The unusual cockpit arrangement has the passengers seated behind the helmsman and works remarkably well. A centre island contains and ice box, sink, and has fold up table leaves each side, with a folding swim ladder recessed in the aft end.

"Black Jack" has been a consistent winner on both line and handicap in Japan prompting the owner to start thinking about a race yacht.
